Fall 2023 Medical Presentations

This semester, we helped prepare session attendees for a career in medicine by covering topics such as scientific literacy, public health, and effective study strategies. We hope these videos will be helpful in your everyday life!

September 10th, 2023 (11:00am - 11:40am PDT)
Topic: Introduction and Effective Study Strategies 
Description: In this session, we will briefly discuss the purpose and structure of our program. Then, we will delve into effective study strategies that students can utilize in their everyday life, followed by an example of efficient and organized notes taken during college lectures. By the end of this session, students will have gained knowledge about different study strategies for every type of occasion, as well as helpful websites for their convenience while studying.

Topic: Pathways and Majors For a Career In STEM
Description: In this session we will present about different pathways and majors that students can explore if they are hoping to pursue a career in STEM. Our volunteers will cover the many fields that STEM encompasses, as well as many different careers that students can pursue in each of those fields. We hope that students leave this session feeling more confident about their knowledge concerning STEM fields and gain more clarity on prospective career paths!

Topic: Scientific Literacy - Dissecting Scientific Review Papers
Description: In this session, we will help students develop their scientific literacy by reading through two scientific review papers together. Students will learn the importance of scientific literacy in their everyday life as well as in a future career, and learn how to create article summaries that are commonly required by students in introductory college courses.
 We hope that students are able to feel more confident reading through scientific review papers following this session!

Topic: Preparing For a Medical Career As a Middle or High School Student
Description: In this session, we’ll discuss what the pathway to a medical career looks like -- from schooling, to extracurriculars, to preparation for entering a STEM field. Students will learn what they can begin or continue doing presently in order to best prepare themselves for college, medical school, and beyond. We hope that this session can help students see a clearer pathway to their career of choice!

Topic: Scientific Literacy - Dissecting Scientific Research Papers
Description: 
In this session we will continue our lessons on scientific literacy by focusing on scientific research papers. Using skills learned from our previous session on scientific review papers, we will help students read through college-level research papers and understand article summaries that many introductory college courses require. We hope that this session helps students feel more confident about reading through scientific papers and further developing their scientific literacy!

Topic: Beneficial Skills For a Career In Medicine
Description: In this session we will discuss skills that are beneficial or needed for a career in medicine! These competencies will be based on the different skills laid out by the AAMC (American Association of Medical Colleges). Furthermore, we will discuss what students can do to hone those skills and develop a deeper understanding of them. We hope this session is informative and helps students decide what skills they want to focus on honing as they move towards a career in medicine!

November 5th, 2023 (11:00am - 11:40am PST)
Topic: Current Events in Medicine

Description: This session is focused on current events in medicine, as well as exploring the field of public health. Session attendees will learn about current pressing issues in the field of medicine, and how many different aspects of health are intertwined. We hope this session helps expose students to the field of medicine, why it is important, and what they can do in the future to address these current events.
