Spring 2021 Medical Presentations

This semester, we hope to teach students about the various fields of medicine that they can pursue in the future. Our presentations will cover fascinating medical topics that are relevant to our current circumstances, and we will also discuss new fields of science that will be a major part of the medical field in the future. 

January 24th, 2021 (10:00am - 10:40am)
Topic: Medical Specialties
Description: In this session, we will discuss common specialties within the medical field. Youth will gain insight on the typical day of a medical professional who works within each respective medical specialty. Participants will also learn about the residency length and average salary associated with various medical specialties.

Topic: Speaker -- Dr. Ann Chuang, Breast Surgeon
Description: Dr. Chuang is a board certified, fellowship trained breast surgeon who is based in Jersey City & Montclair, New Jersey. Dr. Chuang is also a member of The American Board of Surgery, Society of Surgical Oncology, and The Am
erican Society of Breast Surgeons. She completed her General Surgery residency at Nassau University Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center, where she was Chief Resident and an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) instructor. Topic: Speaker -- Dr. Elizabeth Greene, Psychiatrist
Description: Dr. Elizabeth A Greene, MD is a doctor primarily located in Fort Belvoir, VA. She has 19 years of experience, and was a psychiatrist in the United States Air Force. Her specialty is psychiatry. She is currently working as a psychiatrist with a specialty in family medicine.

Topic: Physiology
Description: In this session, we will learn about different body systems and various categories of muscles. Our presentation will focus on different types of muscles in the body and how they allow you to move in certain ways. Some examples of these muscles will be the pectoralis, hamstrings, quadriceps, and more.

Topic: Speaker -- Dr. Lalani, Internal Medicine & Palliative Care / Hospice Physician
Description: Dr. Lalani is a board certified internal medicine hospitalist and NYU trained palliative care/hospice physician based in New York City. Topic: Dermatology
Description: Our volunteers will present about the importance of skin and its role in living organisms. We will also cover diseases and health conditions that affect the skin. Some examples include skin cancer, atopic dermatitis (eczema), acne and more!

Topic: Oncology
Description: We will discuss how cancers develop in the body and various treatment methods used by oncologists. Students will learn about different types of cancers, their associated statistics and how medical advancements have increased the average survival rate. We will also learn about causes of cancer including environmental factors, genetics and more!

Topic: Speaker -- Dr. Sarah, Family Doctor and Cosmetic Injector
Description: Dr. Sarah is a family doctor and cosmetic injector based in Toronto, Canada. She completed her undergraduate degree in biochemistry at the University of Waterloo. Topic: Radiology
Description: Students will learn about different types of x-rays, how they are taken and what they can reveal about a patient. We will discuss specific cases when an x-ray may be needed. We will also show examples of what an x-ray may look like and teach students how it can be analyzed.

Description: This semester, we are especially grateful to have a representative from Genentech come speak to our youth. Andrea Cortez has represented Genetech in many events, such as college lectures. She will talk about bioengineering, biotechnology, the history of Genentech and the work of Genentech. Topic: Cardiology & Pulmonology
Description: In this session, we will talk about the structure of the heart and its function in the human body. We will also explore different diseases and health conditions that affect the heart like heart failure, coronary heart disease, aortic aneurysms, heart diseases at birth, etc. ​

Topic: Nutrition
Description: In this session, our participants will learn about components of a healthy diet. Our volunteers will present about many different nutrients and vitamins, including calcium, vitamin C, vitamin D, etc. We will also cover how they are obtained and what each does for the body in terms of growth, healing and daily needs. ​

Description: In this session, we will talk about what surgery is and why it is important. Students will learn about different types of surgery and why they might be needed. We’ll talk about health conditions and emergencies in which surgeries can save lives.
