Topic: Introduction to Medicine
Description: During this session, we discussed the purpose of the Youth in Pre Med program in supporting our participants, and encouraged students to share their interests in the medical field. We also discussed the pathway into medicine, including actions you can take in middle and high school to prepare for medical school. Participants learned about helpful extracurriculars, pre-med requirements, and the journey post-college and medical school to becoming a doctor!

Topic: Guest Speaker -- Alex Hernandez
Description: Alex is a senior at Brown University concentrating in neuroscience with clinical interests in cardiothoracic surgery. During his time as an undergraduate student, he has served as a teaching assistant for biochemistry, volunteered at the cancer center at Rhode Island Hospital, served as a patient advocate, conducted cardiovascular research and been published in Neurology for his neuroscience research. In his free time, he enjoys playing jazz music on saxophone, weight-lifting and creating content to help pre-med students. We thank Alex for taking the time to speak with our program participants!

Topic: Endocrinology
Description: In this session, our executive board member Michelle and our interns Jayla, Eman, and Maile discussed the topic of endocrinology and its significance. Program participants learned how the endocrine system works, its function in the body, and the anatomy of the system. Our presenters also discussed the responsibilities of an endocrinologist, as well as common endocrine conditions and disorders.

Topic: Emergent Orthopedics in Residency
Description: In this session, our executive board member Sora and our interns Vienne, Kainat, and Suleimon discussed the fields of emergency and sports medicine, the medical pathway associated with both specialties, and specific medical cases that may arise in those settings. Program participants learned about burns, tennis elbow, open fractures, and concussions in particular, and how each condition is treated.
