Spring 2024 Medical Presentations

This semester, our interns presented their interests in medicine to our program participants. We hope these videos will be helpful in your STEM learning journey!

February 18th, 2024 (11:00am - 11:40am PDT)
Topic: Nutritional Health
Description: In this session, our interns delve into the topic of nutritional health and discuss five main topics: an overview of nutrition and a healthy diet, types of vitamins and nutrients, overall benefits of a nutritional diet, and disorders and myths. By the end of this session, program participants will be well-versed in the many different types of vitamins, sources of different nutrients, and will be able to debunk myths about a healthy diet.

February 25th, 2024 (11:00am - 11:40am PDT)
Topic: Rare Medical Diseases
Description: In this session, our interns Trisha and Zamina presented on the topic of rare medical diseases. We will discuss the definition and provide examples of rare medical diseases, as well as teach our program participants about specific types of rare medical diseases. We hope that students leave this session with more knowledge on a wide variety of rare medical diseases!

Topic: Medical Specialties
Description: In this session, our interns Sora, Kayla, and Mahi presented on medical specialties. Students will about the fields of cardiology, orthopedics, dermatology, pediatrics, ophthalmology, and psychiatry.
 Our interns teach program participants about subspecialties within the fields, how doctors in these fields diagnose their patients, and common conditions that arise in these medical specialties. We hope that our students enjoyed this session on different medical specialties!

March 10th, 2024 (11:00am - 11:40am PDT)
Topic: Anatomy and Physiology
Description: In this session, our interns Alex, Hajer, Hamza, Nicole, and Nathaniel presented on the topic of anatomy and physiology. Interns presented on the function of the central nervous system: the brain and the spinal cord. Students also learned about the peripheral nervous system, including the cranial nerves, spinal nerves, cauda equina, and disorders associated with these nerves. Finally, our interns described the function of the eyes and autonomic nervous system!

Topic: Pathology of the Diseased Brain
Description: In this session, our interns Josephine and Abi presented on the pathology of the diseased brain. Students learned about the definition of pathology, its connection to the rest of the human body, and different types of pathologies involving the diseased brain. A deep dive into neurological diseases and complications included epilepsy, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, autism, bipolar disorder (1 and 2), dyslexia, and strokes. Finally, students learned about career pathways related to pathology!

Topic: Psychology and Mental Health
Description: In this session, our interns Kelly, Michelle, and Jamia presented on the topic of psychology and mental health. Students learned about an overview of psychology, including clinical, cognitive, behavioral, and biopsychology. Additionally, we discussed different mental disorders as well as resources for those who are affected by these disorders. We encourage everyone to be kind to others as we do not know what challenges others may be facing. We hope this session was helpful and informative for our participants!

Topic: Cancer

Description: In this session, our interns Elaine, Jayla, Aanya, and Kaz presented on the topic of cancer. Students learned about the definition of cancer, followed by an overview of cell mutations and tumors. Our interns presented on factors that may contribute to cancer and different types of cancer in the body. We hope that program participants have a deeper understanding of the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer, as well as the presently ongoing cancer research and new treatments!

Topic: Novel Medical Advancements

Description: This session was led by our interns Manan, Allyson, and Maren, presenting on the topic of novel medical advancements. Program attendees learned about different kinds of vaccines, applications and limitations of stem cells, and organ transplants and organoids. We hope our students left this session with more knowledge about current medical advancements and ongoing research!

April 21st, 2024 (11:00am - 11:40am PST)
Topic: Public Health

Description: Our public health session was led by our interns Rhomie, Paulina, and Alina. They discussed the mission of public health, past pandemics, sanitation and environmental health, preparedness for disaster response, and prevention through policies. Students learned about the public health approach, including surveillance, risk factor identification, intervention evaluation, and implementation. We hope our program participants gained a deeper understanding of the core functions and essential services of public health!

Topic: CRISPR
Description: In this session, our interns Jayla, Elaine, and Aayna presented on the topic of CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats). Students were introduced to the technology and learned about the origin and discovery, uses, and mechanisms of CRISPR. We hope that this was helpful in exposing students to the topics of genetic engineering and genetic therapy!

Topic: Cancer and Nanotechnology

Description: Our interns Sonakshi and James led our session on cancer and nanotechnology. During this session, program participants learned what nanotechnology is, how it relates to cancer, and future developments of nanotechnology to detect cancer at earlier stages in patients. We hope that this session was informative and engaging for our program attendees!
